What is a AVI file?
AVI (Audio Video Interleave) was introduced by Microsoft in 1992 with Video for Windows. It is a simple RIFF container from the CD-ROM era, still found on old digital cameras, dashcams, DVD rips and in video archives, usually with DivX, Xvid or MJPEG video.
Modern phones, browsers and social networks do not play AVI. Converting it to MP4 gives a much smaller file that plays everywhere, which is the right move for old family videos.
