Need an iPhone photo or screenshot in a format every editor accepts without further quality loss? PNG is the answer. ConvertCove decodes the HEIC file locally and saves every pixel losslessly, so the PNG you get is as good as the HEIC can be.
How to convert HEIC to PNG
- Click Select HEIC files or drag them onto the box above. You can add as many as you like.
- Check that the target says PNG. Click the slider icon next to a file to change its options.
- Press Convert. Each file shows its own progress, and the work happens on your device.
- Download files one by one, or use Download all (ZIP). Press Convert more to start a new batch.
iPhone screenshots are saved as PNG already. Only photos taken with the camera are HEIC, so check the extension before converting.
HEIC vs PNG
What is HEIC?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) stores images compressed with HEVC. Apple uses it for photos, and some Android phones and cameras use the closely related HEIF. It is efficient but poorly supported outside the Apple ecosystem. More about the HEIC format.
What is PNG?
PNG is a lossless raster format standardised in 1996. It keeps exact pixel values, supports full alpha transparency and is the default for screenshots, UI graphics and images that will be edited again. More about the PNG format.
| HEIC | PNG | |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | High Efficiency Image (HEIC/HEIF) | Portable Network Graphics |
| Extensions | .heic, .heif, .hif | .png |
| MIME type | image/heic | image/png |
When to convert HEIC to PNG
- You will retouch, crop or composite the photo and do not want a second round of JPEG artefacts.
- You need a format accepted by design tools such as Figma, Canva or older versions of Photoshop.
- The image is a screenshot or graphic with sharp text, where JPG would smear the edges.
- You want a master copy that will not degrade if it is saved repeatedly.
Quality and settings
PNG is lossless, so there is no quality slider: what HEIC decoded is exactly what you get. The trade-off is size. A 2 MB iPhone photo commonly becomes a 10–20 MB PNG because PNG compression is designed for flat graphics, not photographic noise. If file size matters more than perfection, choose HEIC to JPG or HEIC to WebP instead. You can also set a maximum width or height in the options to shrink large photos while converting.
