    What is a MOV file?

MOV is Apple’s QuickTime container, introduced in 1991 and the direct ancestor of MP4. iPhones, many cameras and macOS screen recordings save MOV files. Since 2017 iPhones record HEVC (H.265) video inside MOV, which is efficient but poorly supported on Windows and in many web upload forms.

Converting MOV to MP4 with H.264 makes the video play everywhere. Editors on a Mac usually prefer to keep MOV, especially ProRes recordings, which are edit-friendly but enormous.
