What is a RAR file?
RAR was created by Eugene Roshal in 1993 and is maintained by win.rar GmbH. Creating RAR files requires the paid WinRAR, but the decompression code is freely available, so many tools can read it. RAR 5, introduced in 2013, changed the format and is not readable by very old unpackers.
