More and more sites deliver images as AVIF, and some phones and cameras now save it too. Browsers handle it well, but plenty of editors, office apps and upload forms do not. Convert AVIF to JPG below and use the picture anywhere.
How to convert AVIF to JPG
- Click Select AVIF files or drag them onto the box above. You can add as many as you like.
- Check that the target says JPG. Click the slider icon next to a file to change its options.
- Press Convert. Each file shows its own progress, and the work happens on your device.
- Download files one by one, or use Download all (ZIP). Press Convert more to start a new batch.
Decoding uses your browser’s built-in AVIF support. If conversion fails on an old browser, update it or try a current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
AVIF vs JPG
What is AVIF?
AVIF stores still images compressed with the AV1 video codec, developed by the Alliance for Open Media. It often beats JPEG by 50% in file size at similar quality and supports HDR, wide colour gamut and transparency. Chrome added support in 2020, Firefox in 2021 and Safari in 2022. What is JPG?
JPG trades some efficiency for unmatched compatibility. Anything that shows images, from a 2005 photo frame to a modern CMS, reads JPG. More about the JPG format.
| AVIF | JPG | |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | AV1 Image File Format | JPEG image |
| Extensions | .avif | .jpg, .jpeg, .jfif, .jpe |
| MIME type | image/avif | image/jpeg |
When to convert AVIF to JPG
- Windows Photos, an older Photoshop or a document editor will not open the AVIF.
- A marketplace, job portal or government form only accepts JPG.
- You are sharing images with people on older devices.
- You want to edit an image downloaded from a site that serves AVIF.
Quality and settings
AVIF is highly compressed, so the JPG will usually be 2–3× larger at the same visual quality; that is expected. Quality 85–90 is a good default. HDR or wide-gamut AVIF images are converted to standard sRGB-range JPG and may look slightly less vivid. Transparent regions are filled with the background colour you choose.
