    What is an AVIF file?

AVIF is the AV1 Image File Format, published by the Alliance for Open Media in 2019. It places AV1-compressed frames inside a HEIF container and regularly produces files around half the size of JPEG at the same perceived quality, with support for HDR, 10/12-bit colour and transparency.

Chrome (2020), Firefox (2021) and Safari (2022) all display AVIF. Encoding is slower than WebP, so it is best used for large images where the savings matter most.
