What is a JPG file?
JPEG was standardised by the Joint Photographic Experts Group in 1992 and remains the most widely used image format on earth. It splits the picture into 8×8 blocks, transforms them with the discrete cosine transform and discards detail the eye is least sensitive to.
JPG is perfect for photographs and anything that must open everywhere. It is a poor fit for text, line art and logos (edges blur and ring) and it cannot store transparency. Repeatedly editing and re-saving a JPG slowly degrades it.
