What is a FLAC file?
FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) compresses audio without discarding anything: decode a FLAC and you get back the exact samples of the original WAV. Files are typically 50–60% of the WAV size. It is open, royalty-free and maintained by the Xiph.Org Foundation.
FLAC is the standard for ripped CDs, hi-res downloads and music archives. It supports up to 32-bit samples and very high sample rates, plus proper text tags. Windows, macOS, Android and iOS (via the Files app) all play it.
