What is a OPUS file?
Opus is an open audio codec standardised by the IETF in 2012 (RFC 6716). It switches between a speech mode and a music mode and beats every other lossy codec at low bitrates: 32 kbps sounds good for voice, and around 128 kbps is transparent for music.
WhatsApp and Telegram voice messages, Discord, Zoom and every WebRTC call use Opus. Browsers and Android play .opus files; older Apple software and many desktop players do not, which is the usual reason to convert Opus to MP3.
