What is a WEBP file?
WebP was announced by Google in 2010, derived from the VP8 video codec. Lossy WebP is typically 25–35% smaller than JPEG at similar quality, and lossless WebP is around a quarter smaller than PNG. It also supports alpha transparency and animation.
Every current browser displays WebP, and many CDNs serve it automatically. Desktop support is the weak spot: older Office versions, photo viewers and print services may not open it, which is why people convert WebP to JPG or PNG.
